New Goulburn battery beats grid upgrade for electric vehicle ultra rapid charging

Australian fast charging company ChargeFox has installed a sizeable battery installation in Goulburn to support its new ultra-rapid electric vehicle charger, as well as earning income from providing frequency services to the grid, and saving money by avoiding a grid upgrade.

The 250kW/273kWh battery, using LG-Chem cells and Vacon inverters, has been designed and installed by PowerTec, and is the second time that ChargeFox has chosen a battery as a cheaper alternative to upgrading the permanent power supply at a charging site.

“In Goulburn we have a 180kW connection to the grid, which powers about 30kW of constant load at the service station, leaving 150kW for the chargers. We’ve installed 750kW of Tritium chargers there, with about 50kW of solar coming,” says Evan Beaver, head of charging at ChargeFox.

“The battery is 250kW/273kWh, and monitors the grid supply, the petrol station load and the charger demand and lops the demand

The Day – Man fatally struck by vehicle outside Electric Boat in Groton

Groton — A man was fatally struck by a vehicle outside of Electric Boat about 10 p.m. Tuesday, officials and a family member said.

The man, an employee of the Reactor Plant Contracting Organization based in Groton, was leaving EB at the end of his shift, walking east in a crosswalk from the South Gate when he was struck by a vehicle going south on Eastern Point Road, according to EB President Kevin Graney and the City of Groton Police Department.

He died at the scene, police said.

The driver did not sustain any injuries, police said.

The man’s name was not yet being released by police or the family.

Last month, two EB employees were seriously injured when they were struck by a vehicle in the roundabout near the EB facility in New London. A man and woman both sustained injuries in the one-car accident, which happened on Pequot

Tesla to drop price of Model 3 in China to access electric vehicle subsidies

Elon Musk says Tesla will drop the price of the Standard Range Model 3 in China from Friday so that it will be eligible for China’s “new energy vehicle” subsidies.

Speaking at the company’s earnings call for the first quarter of 2020 on Thursday (Australian time), Musk said he was excited to announce the price drop.

China’s electric car market has suffered a blow over the last three quarters after the Asian economic leader dropped subsidies for electric vehicles.

Recent reports that China’s government was considering extending subsidies as a response to boost the economy in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis left some wondering if non-domestic auto makers, including Tesla, would be left out in the cold.

The 2 year extension ultimately included only vehicles costing RMB300,000 ($A64,85) or less. Currently, the base price for the Standard Range (SR) Model 3 made at Tesla’s Shanghai factory is RMB323,800 ($A69,995

Lincoln cancels use of Rivian’s technology for its first electric vehicle

The effects of the global pandemic are expected to force automakers into alliances to cover development costs for expensive technology. But Ford confirmed today that it canceled plans to use Rivian’s electric skateboard platform for a Lincoln-badged electric vehicle. Ford still plans to produce a Lincoln EV but is using its own technology.

In April 2019, Ford invested a half billion dollars in Rivian. Less than a year later, in January 2020, Ford announced that it would work with Rivian on a new EV to be badged as a Lincoln.

At the time, Joy Falotico, president of the Lincoln Motor Company, said:

Working with Rivian marks a pivotal point for Lincoln as we move toward a future that includes fully electric vehicles. This vehicle will take Quiet Flight to a new place — zero emissions, effortless performance, and connected and intuitive technology. It’s going to be stunning.

Ask the Right Questions About Electric Vehicle Adoption

With oil prices plummeting, it’s reasonable to expect that some advisors and investors are pondering whether slumping crude bodes ill for electric vehicle adoption and ETFs such as the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (NYSEARCA: ARKQ).

Known in part for being one of the ETFs with the largest weights to Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), ARKQ captures the converging industrial and technology sectors, capitalizing from autonomous vehicles, robotics, 3D printing, and energy storage technologies. That wide mandate helps lever the ARK fund too much more than just self-driving cars, an important trait at a time of rapid robotics advancements.

With a 13% weight to Tesla, ARKQ is indeed levered to the electric vehicle trend, but investors may not need to fret over lower oil prices affecting the ARK fund. In fact, that question may miss the market altogether.

“While investors are asking if electric vehicle (EV) sales will fall

Electric vehicle networks need to be open, smart, clean and equitable

A group of major automakers, utilities, tech companies, environmental firms and industry groups have come together to outline best practices to help build electric vehicle charging networks that are open, smart, clean and equitable.

The agreement, called the Transportation Electrification Accord, seeks to build on lessons learned from building out power and information network infrastructure — like the importance of open standards — and to use these tenants to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle charging networks. The union is one of the largest of its kind, and gathers a diverse group of stakeholders together, to work on this early stage sector.

“The goal is to show policy makers that there is consensus in the industry around how to do some of this stuff,” Chris King, chief policy officer for Siemens Digital Grid, said. King noted that the group is looking to inform both future legislation as well as regulation
