Lincoln cancels use of Rivian’s technology for its first electric vehicle

The effects of the global pandemic are expected to force automakers into alliances to cover development costs for expensive technology. But Ford confirmed today that it canceled plans to use Rivian’s electric skateboard platform for a Lincoln-badged electric vehicle. Ford still plans to produce a Lincoln EV but is using its own technology.

In April 2019, Ford invested a half billion dollars in Rivian. Less than a year later, in January 2020, Ford announced that it would work with Rivian on a new EV to be badged as a Lincoln.

At the time, Joy Falotico, president of the Lincoln Motor Company, said:

Working with Rivian marks a pivotal point for Lincoln as we move toward a future that includes fully electric vehicles. This vehicle will take Quiet Flight to a new place — zero emissions, effortless performance, and connected and intuitive technology. It’s going to be stunning.

General Motors
has big electric-vehicle ambitions, and Wall Street appears to be impressed.

“GM comes out swinging against Tesla,” Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a Wednesday evening research report, following the company’s electric-vehicle technology presentation near Detroit earlier in the day.

Ives covers
Tesla
(ticker: TSLA) stock but not General Motors (GM). He was interested in what the state of EV technology is at a traditional auto maker that predominantly builds gasoline-powered vehicles. “We believe the event was a clear shot across the bow against [Elon] Musk and Tesla, which continues to lead the EV landscape by a clear margin.”

Even though Ives thinks Tesla is in the lead, he said Musk’s company has to take GM “seriously in this EV arms race.”

GM CEO Mary Barra said Wednesday that “from 2020 to 2025, we will allocate more

Bicycle Technology | The Franklin Institute

The late 1800s ushered in a huge bicycle boom, and people began to experiment with bicycle shapes and styles to suit the varying needs of the rider. Will this bicycle be used for racing or for recreation? How fast will the rider want to go? How comfortable should the rider be while riding? Is this bicycle safe to ride? These questions and much more led people to develop new technologies that would help evolve the bicycle from the high-wheel models seen in early pictures to some of the high-tech racing machines we have today.

In the last decade of the 19th century, at least one-third of all new patent applications at the U.S Patent Office were bicycle related. People focused the changes and improvements they made on what they thought bicycle riders wanted or required. Despite a varying degree of styles and models, four major focuses stood out from the
