Groton — A man was fatally struck by a vehicle outside of Electric Boat about 10 p.m. Tuesday, officials and a family member said.
The man, an employee of the Reactor Plant Contracting Organization based in Groton, was leaving EB at the end of his shift, walking east in a crosswalk from the South Gate when he was struck by a vehicle going south on Eastern Point Road, according to EB President Kevin Graney and the City of Groton Police Department.
He died at the scene, police said.
The driver did not sustain any injuries, police said.
The man’s name was not yet being released by police or the family.
Last month, two EB employees were seriously injured when they were struck by a vehicle in the roundabout near the EB facility in New London. A man and woman both sustained injuries in the one-car accident, which happened on Pequot Avenue about noon on March 4.
Graney said that although EB works closely with local police departments to ensure traffic safety, his “own personal observation of the incident last night highlights the need for each of us to remain vigilant for our own safety.”
“These tragic events are reminders to obey signs and be mindful of our surroundings, especially as pedestrians, when we are walking near our facilities or to and from our vehicles each day,” Graney said in a statement.
Garney encouraged drivers to be vigilant about obeying traffic signals, crosswalks and the speed limit and encouraged employees walking to and from EB at night to be extra cautious.
“As I’ve stressed over the last few weeks, the safety of those who work at or in support of Electric Boat is always first in my mind. Please work together to make sure we all continue to stay safe,” Graney said.
No further information was available. An investigation into the incident was ongoing with the help of the Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad, police said.
